Labour Market Information (LMI)
The tight labour market that started in 2006 had a major impact
on operations for the petroleum industry and clearly demonstrated
the need for comprehensive labour market information to plan and
develop a skilled petroleum workforce. The Petroleum HR
Council (the Council) is the primary resource to address workforce
development and labour market issues in the Canadian petroleum
industry. The Council collaborates with partners to develop
strategies, solutions, products and services that help industry
develop a sustainable, skilled and productive oil and gas
workforce. The Council develops and provides up-to-date Labour
Market Information (LMI) on workforce trends, issues, and
projections in the short-, medium- and long-term (to 2020).
LMI informs decision making at all levels.
LMI is vital for planning, developing and recruiting a qualified
workforce for the petroleum industry. The Council's LMI helps:
- Companies plan successful retention and
recruitment strategies.
- Governments make policy and program decisions
including immigration strategies, labour adjustment programs, and
skills and training strategies.
- Professional associations promote their
professions and support their members.
- Education and training institutions and
organizations plan for program content, enrollment and
funding.
- Career practitioners and guidance counsellors
make career recommendations.
- Job seekers plan their careers.
It is expected that approximately 105,000 workers will need to
be hired by 2020 to support new industry activity and to replace
retiring workers.
