Key Job Families
About
The
Decade Ahead identified that the composition and competency
requirements of jobs within the upstream petroleum industry have
and will continue to evolve in response to changing technology, as
well as the business and regulatory environment.
Shifting skill requirements have redefined entry-level job
requirements resulting in a lack of understanding of the skills and
competencies required to enter the upstream petroleum industry.
Feedback from career influencers such as parents, teachers,
guidance counsellors, community employment counsellors and
post-secondary training institutions indicated they didn't have the
information required to assist others in making informed decisions
about employment opportunities in the upstream industry.
Results
Completed in 2005, this project:
- Documented the key job families and occupations within Canada's
upstream petroleum industry.
- Conducted an analysis that identified the gaps between existing
industry-relevant job profile information and tools and
stakeholders' needs.
- Identified priorities and recommendations related to the
development of sector-specific job profiles and tools for
entry-level and other priority employment positions.
The resulting Careers in Oil and
Gas: Rich With Potential (PDF) information package was
developed in collaboration with over 40 organizations representing
petroleum industry, education and human resource professionals. We
believe it has broad use in helping those considering careers in
the upstream petroleum industry to understand the wide range of job
profiles and opportunities available to them.
The information package was also key in creation of www.careersinoilandgas.com, which provides
information about the industry and assists those interested in
planning their own careers. It is also used to educate both youth
and those who influence career decisions, in understanding the
possibility for a rewarding career in petroleum.
