ITT Model: Key Career Decision Points
The top row of the Increasing the Talent model
illustrates the key career decision points potential employees may
face. Those decision points are very important! They provide
valuable opportunities for employers to influence the choices being
made by potential employees, as illustrated by the boxes in the
bottom half of the model.
Let's start with the decisions facing potential employees. For
some in the labour
pool, the first decision may be whether or not to choose the
petroleum industry for their career. From there, they might
next choose a trade or profession that fits within the petroleum
industry, or they may simply choose a company to
work for.
Others in the labour pool may first choose a trade or
profession. From there, they may still need to decide whether or
not to choose the industry, or they
may move directly on to choosing a
company.

Once workers start working for a company, they move into the
Exit/Stay Decision box. Employers need to remember that a decision
about whether to leave or stay in a position is made by each
employee every day. That decision is influenced by the factors in
the bottom row of boxes, such as workplace experiences or community
experiences.
All the decisions shown in the model can be reversed, as indicated
by the two-way arrows. For example, someone who has chosen the
petroleum industry and even chosen a company to
work for, may still change their mind and step back into the labour pool.
Those who decide against the petroleum industry may head off to
work in one of the competing industries. External factors -- such
as family, health, cultural or financial issues -- may also lead an
employee to leave a company.
